‘Taxi Driver’ Returns To Deliver K-Drama Revenge And Offers A Hotline

2023 is turning out to be a good year for revenge—at least in k-dramas. The year is still new and there have already been some exciting dramas in this genre.
K-drama revenge is delivered in many forms. Sometimes it’s cruel, even violent, and sometimes the stories focus on resolving an injustice. The aim of a revenge drama might be ruining an enemy’s life. Or it might involve bringing a criminal to justice and clearing an innocent man’s name. Each drama in this genre finds distinctive ways to exact revenge and/or correct injustice. The second season of Taxi Driver, which airs on Feb. 17, will once again deliver revenge in a taxi.
In the drama Taxi Driver the Rainbow Taxi company offers more than the traditional taxi service. The company advertises its service with the following words: “Don’t kill yourself. Take revenge. We’ll do it for you.” One of the avenging taxis is driven by Kim Do-ki, played by Lee Je-hoon. The former Special Forces officer works for Rainbow Taxi because he knows what it’s like to want revenge. His mother was murdered when he was young. Since he could not take revenge on the man who killed his mother, he offers the “revenge-call” service to those who have been wronged. Do-ki and the staff of Rainbow Taxi avenge wrongs.
Most of the revenge delivered by the Rainbow Taxi staff seems well-deserved, but that doesn’t mean what they do is legal. Rainbow Taxi is owned by Jang Sung-cheol, played by Kim Eui-sang. Sung-cheol is the director of Blue Bird, a foundation that helps crime victims. At Blue Bird he must help victims within the confines of the law. At Rainbow Taxi he offers another option to those without recourse. Being a vigilante is a risky undertaking for Eui-sang and his staff. They must be careful not to get caught.
Kim Eui-sang previously appeared in films such as Extreme Job, Rampant and Train to Busan and the TV series W, Arthdal Chronicles and My Fellow Citizens. Before reprising the role of Do-ki, Lee Je-hoon appeared in the films Architecture 101 and Time To Huntand dramas such as Secret Door, Signal and Where Stars Land. The Rainbow Taxi staff , played by Pyo Ye-jin, Jang Hyuk-jin and Bae Yoo-ram, have returned for the second season.
Although revenge is mostly a serious subject in k-dramas, it can sometimes be petty. Or even very funny. And funny revenge stories may qualify the drama’s fans for some perks. The streaming platform Kocowa has set up a hotline (833-4-REVENGE/833-4-738-3643) so viewers can call in their revenge stories with a comedic twist. Up to five callers who leave a funny revenge story on the hotline may be eligible to win a year’s free subscription to the streaming platform. Also, callers may qualify for a comedic virtual visit from Kim Do-ki and the Rainbow Taxi team of vigilantes.
Taxi Driver is based on the webtoon The Deluxe Taxi (Red Cage) by Carlos and Lee Jae-jin. The first season premiered on SBS and Kocowa in 2021. The second season will air Fridays and Saturdays through April.
